MS fatigue saps  
energy
 and is debilitating.

This is a common symptom of Multiple Sclerosis. It is difficult to understand as it is invisible it will remain with you for a few days or a few months.


This is called ‘MS Fatigue’. The severity of symptoms depend on which part of your brain or spinal cord is affected. It will happen without warning and without reason. A feeling of heaviness of limbs and  difficulty to moving. Difficulty to write can also occur.

There are two types of fatigue.

Primary MS fatigue

This occurs due to damage to nerves and messages from the brain gets interrupted. The body has to work harder which result in MS fatigue.

Secondary MS fatigue

This is caused by the illness itself such as pain, spasms, disturbance to sleep, and depression. Certain medicines could cause this type of fatigue. Poor diet and infections can also cause this type of fatigue.


There will be a feeling of weakness, lack of energy and exhaustion. MS fatigue is debilitating and may take long to recover. No two persons will have similar fatigue levels. Managing the symptoms is important to lead a normal life.


A feeling of heaviness of arms and legs may happen which will make moving difficult. A rest time is needed between tasks. It could also lead to difficulty to concentrate or understand new information.


When the person is fatigues other complications may appear, such as balance problems, blurred vision.

The degree of fatigue depends on the type of Multiple Sclerosis.

Primary MS fatigue

This type of fatigue is due to the changes in the brain and the degree of damage to the Central Nervous System. Since the messages from the brain to the other parts of the body are disrupted, the body has to work much harder. This results in MS fatigue.

Heat sensitive fatigue

This is also a debilitating symptom where the body temperature rises due to heat, after a hot bath or due to infection.

Secondary MS fatigue

This is caused due to symptoms of MS itself, such as pain, sleep disturbance, depression etc. Medication can also cause MS fatigue. As well as poor diet and infections.

Analyze your fatigue. It could help to know what brings it on and could implement strategies to overcome them.


Daily physical activities, of mild or moderate intensity, could help. 


Fatigue may manifest like a feeling of weakness, lack of energy or even total exhaustion.


Women feel a weariness which could be crippling. This weariness can become overpowering and would remain unabated even after a nap. It could also lead to low a lower quality of life.


Noise ­­­around you and lights could also result in fatigue. Cognitive functions such as slow processing speed and mental exhaustion could also immerge.

Each person will have different symptoms of fatigue and severity. Identifying what triggered fatigue and then take measures to prevent the trigger or method of coping with it.

Fatigue tends to get worse as the day progresses. It also worsens with heat and humidity. Depression & anxiety can lead to fatigue. Fatigue could be due to infection such as a cold or bladder issues.

MS fatigue occur because the body has to work harder to compensate for damaged nerves and immunity system activity caused by MS.
